Nickel Oxide

Nickel oxide (NiO), classified as a p-type semiconductor, holds significant promise across diverse domains such as catalysis, gas sensors, lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, and magnetism. This is because of its ample availability in nature, notable theoretical capacity, low toxicity, minimal environmental impact, and robust stability [47]. NiO’s multifaceted applicability arises from its unique properties, including its electronic structure, crystallographic arrangement (Figure 12.5), and surface characteristics, which enable efficient charge transfer, adsorption phenomena, and redox reactions. Recent studies have revealed that the electrochemical redox reaction of NiO is not merely an adsorption/desorption process of anions. Instead, it involves a surface Faradaic reaction of Ni2+/Ni3+ during oxidation, while the reverse Faradaic reaction (Ni3+ & Ni2+) takes place at the surface of NiO during reduction [62]. The pseudocapacitive behavior of NiO is primarily influenced by its morphology, crystallinity, and conductivity [63].
